Carl's RIP III

I've been trying to decide which of the options to go for with Carl's challenge. I think I'll commit to Peril the Second (just two books) between now and October 31. I also decided to only use books that I already had in my tbr pile. So, without further ado, I'll choose two out of these:

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
Outer Dark by Cormac McCarthy
The Sister by Poppy Adams
The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher
An Absolute Gentleman by R. M. Kinder
Down River by John Hart
Echoes from the Macabre by Daphne du Maurier
Hard Row by Margaret Maron

Some of these are lighter mysteries, but they've been in the pile a while so I thought I'd consider them as part of this challenge. I'd like to get to more than two books, but I figure I can aim low and possibly exceed my challenge commitment.

I've been wanting to read The Sister since it came out. Sounds like that would be a great R.I.P. read.

I'm also going with the second peril. Hope I can actually finish it :)

Carl, thank you for once again hosting this fun challenge. I'm excited to participate this year. I've read so much about it on everyone's blogs.

Ooh a du Maurier I haven't read, I'll be particularly interested in your review if you read that one!

After pretty much dropping out of last year's challenge, I did a similar thing this time around and aimed low. It worked, I'm already over my two books...I bet if I'd picked a higher target something would have cropped up and thwarted me again...*chuckle*

iliana, I know it does sound good, doesn't it? I hope I'm not disappointed. It makes me think of The Thirteenth Tale that I read last year around this time, which I absolutely loved. Hopefully, we'll both be able to finish the challenge.

Quixotic, I love du Maurier, too. This is actually a book of her short stories. I'm not usually a big short story reader, but I think since it's her, I'll be O.K. I know what you mean about being thwarted. :)

Great list! The Haunting of Hill House is one of my all-time favorites :)

ex libris, I really liked We've Always Lived in the Castle by Jackson. I'm hoping I'll like this one just as much.

nymeth, that's part of the fun of this challenge -- seeing what everyone else is reading and awaiting their reviews.

naida, I'm looking forward to that one. I've had it for quite a while and just haven't gotten to it.

You have some good books on your list. I really enjoyed The Sister and I also have The Suspicions of Mr Whicher (though don't think I;ll get it read for this challenge). Which du Maurier book is this? Short stories? I thought I had heard of them all, but I'm not familiar with this! Now I'll have to check it out. I really like her short stories and highly recommend Don't Look Now.

Danielle, yes this is a short story collection that I found at a library sale a while back. I hadn't known about it beforehand either. I'll check out the collection you recommend, as well.

Great list. you're tempting me to join the challenge, even though I'm feeling down on challenges generally. But with so many interesting books available, maybe I could handle one?

Lisa said...

dorothy, I know I shouldn't have joined it myself, but what can I say? I'm weak. :)

This looks like a cool challenge! But I'm not even going to halfway finish any of the ones I'm already signed up for, so I'll have to pass on it this time around.

I was surprised at how much I liked The Haunting of Hill House. I had seen the movie and while it wasn't all that bad, it made the story seem kind of silly. But the book was good and I always mean to read it again when it's not a requirement for a class and I have more time to enjoy it.

andrea, I know what you mean about challenges. I don't have a great track record with them myself. But, I can't resist. I'm looking forward to The Haunting of Hill House. I'm not a big movie person so I didn't see the movie version.

There are quite a few books in your list I haven't heard of, so I'm off to do some searching. We Have Always Lived in the Castle has been on my must-have list for a while, I must get hold of a copy. It sounds exactly the kind of book I like.

geraniumcat, oh do get We Have Always Lived in the Castle. It's a great book for this challenge and I really enjoyed it. It's really a fast read, as well.
